Links:   There are a couple sites that may be of interest to Haino fans. First, a musician called L (Hiroyuki Usui) who used to be a drummer with Fushitsusha, has a a couple of Fushitsusha live mp3s available for streaming on his site. Taken from 1981 and 1984, neither of which are years that have been documented officially, the music is very interesting. The link is here: http://www.lsounds.net/imp.html.

Second, the photographer, Satoh Gin, took the photos of Haino that were used for the 1981 Watashi Dake? solo album. He has a site of unused shots from this photo session, located at http://www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~gin/rock/haino/watasidake/haino.watasidake001.html. There is also a bit of text (in Japanese) about the black ice cream, how demanding Haino was, and how they created the finished covers.

Interview:   The new volume (volume 26) of the Japanese-language music magazine, G-Modern, contains a long interview (15 pages) with Haino, including several unpublished photographs. Broadside:   The Poison Pie Publishing House, the gracious host of An Unofficial Keiji Haino Website, has published electronically a broadside, titled, a prayer for the repose of the soul of Derek Bailey, which was written by Keiji Haino and first published in The Wire, February 2006, issue 264, page 33. (This issue of the The Wire, which contained many reflections of Bailey in light of his passing, is probably still available from Forced Exposure.) The electronic version of the broadside is posted at http://poisonpie.com/words/others/design/haino/text/index.html. A hard copy version of the broadside is not available, unless you download the image and print it out yourself, in which case I recommend you download the large version for best-looking resolution.

Recording also features special guest FUYUKI YAMAKAWA on the Igil and throat singing. Wonderful sonic mastering job on this double disc from Mr. Plotkin. DESIGN: layout and package by Stephen O’Malley features a die cut letterpress cover that was designed to have the look of a dustcover for a hardcover book. It comes packed in a plastic sleeve which measure 6” X 5”. This is a split release with Important records and a one-time pressing of 1000 copies. $22 post paid in the US. Order from aRCHIVE records.

Website:   Derek Bailey, a musician whom many considered to be the father of non-idiomatic improvisation (aka insect improv, aka plinking and plonking), passed away on December 25, 2005. He collaborated with hundreds of improvisers world-wide including Haino. Haino & Bailey released two records, an album of guitar duets, Drawing Close, Attuning --The Respective Signs of Order and Chaos, released on Tokuma Japan Communications in 1997 and an album of guitar and voice duets, Songs, released on Incus Records in 2000. His funeral is scheduled for January 5, 2006. Pull a few Derek Bailey cds off the shelf and give them a spin.

New Release:   The new Keiji Haino solo album, a joint release on aRCHIVE and Important records, titled Reveal'd to none as yet - an expedience to utterly vanish consciousness while still alive, is released. It can be ordered from the aRCHIVE website at http://www.archivecd.com.
Audio content- mastering by James Plotkin, disc one is mostly layered electronics (air synth, drum pad) and vocals and disc two is Hurdy Gurdy work with vocals. This gives a great feel for what it’s like to see Haino play in his native element around Tokyo at small clubs perfecting his craft while experimenting in a live setting. Folks who enjoyed his recent electronics CD “Uchu Ni Karami Tsuite Iru Waga Itami” on PSF will just love this release
Design- design work by Stephen O’Malley, this is a one time pressing of 1000 copies. Covers are a 3 panel accordion folded 140lb black cardstock with all letterpress print work. Black on black disc is fixed to inside of sleeve onto locking hubs. Unfolded the covers are 15” x 5”, folded down they fit into a 6” x 5” sleeve. Some pics of the release and the letterpress print job getting run off are on the website under the news section www.archivecd.com

New Release:   The Compilation, Not Alone, a joint release by Jnana Records and Durtro Records is available for pre-order. The item can be ordered from www.jnanarecords.com. This is a 5 cd set with a large booklet. All the proceeds from the sale of this project will be donated to Médecins Sans Frontierès specifically to target their work on the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Forthcoming Release:   On the Tzadik website, they have announced an upcoming release by the duo of Keiji Haino & Tatsuya Yoshida. It appears that the album is to bear the unfortunate title, New Rap. Here is the blurb from the Tzadik website:

Haino Keiji is a mysterious psychedelic minstrel who has been performing his peculiar blend of rock, medieval music and improvisation since the early 1970’s. Incredibly prolific, he has headed dozens of bands and released hundreds of CDs on a variety of labels around the globe. His latest project is a wild duo with Ruins mastermind Yoshida Tatsuya, the undisputed master drummer of the Japanese Underground. Featuring Haino’s unique singing and screaming style as well as his best guitar playing to date, this is a remarkably varied and creative program of radical music by two of Japan’s greatest originals.

To put this release in a little more perspective, we might add that this will be the sixth collaboration between Haino & Yoshida to appear on an official release since 2002. See the collaboration section of the discography for additional information on the other releases, which include a duo, a couple releases by the Haino/Yoshida/Sasaki trio, Knead, and a couple releases by the Haino/Yoshida/Natsuno trio, Sanhedolin.
