On the Grass Faerie
About the same time that grasses appeared on Earth (the late Cretaceous period), the grass faerie sauntered onto the scene in Faerie. At the time, everyone in Faerie was shocked by her outrageous adornments. Public figures declared her monocotyledonous attire scandalous, saying, "Whoever heard of covering your seed with only one leaf?" There were gasps of disbelief when she admitted that her leaf blades had been hardened with microscopic silica phytoliths, which discouraged all manner of creatures from nibbling at her alluring form and were several times demonstrated to be sharp enough to cut human skin.
Nowadays, grasses cover twenty percent of Earth and we are rather jaded to the trends deemed so outrageous upon their introduction. In fact, when the grass faerie appeared in our yard and invited us to explore Faerie, not a one of us thought to question either her appearance or her motives. We leapt at the opportunity and, tiny though she was, allowed her to carry us to Faerie, where our education in the ways of the fey began in earnest.
