A Red Sonja Cover Gallery XLVI:

  • title: Red Sonja: The Black Tower (2014)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Amanda Conner
  • writer: Frank Tieri
  • artist: Cezar Razek
  • issue: #2 of 4

4

  • title: Red Sonja (2019)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Amanda Conner
  • writer: Mark Russell
  • artist: Mirko Colak
  • issue: #05 of ongoing series
  • release date: June, 2019
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: Amanda Conner drew the A covers to the first twelve issues of Mark Russell's interpretation of Red Sonja, which began in 2019. These covers are coordinated with the events taking place in the narrative, unlike many of the other Red Sonja covers for this and other series, which are rather artistic exercises in the portrayal of Red Sonja, without a direct connection to the interior story.

5

  • writer: Mark Russell
  • artist: Mirko Colak
  • issue: #06 of ongoing series

  • commentary: Here again, the coloring and lighting is masterfully applied to create the effect that Red Sonja is about to jump off the cover.

7

  • title: Red Sonja (2019)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Christian Ward
  • writer: Mark Russell
  • artist: Mirko Colak
  • issue: #4 of 28
  • release date: May, 2019
  • cover: C variant
  • commentary: Christian Ward drew the C variants to the first six issues of Red Sonja (2019). His very distinctive style stood in sharp contrast to the A covers of Amanda Conner, shown above, or the B variants by Joseph Michael Linsner, for whom we suppose a gallery is still forthcoming.

The orientation of this cover is interesting. Clearly, the graphic designer has some control over how an original artwork can appear on the cover. The designer can translate the picture to focus on a specific portion, or they can choose to zoom in on a detail of the artwork, leaving the rest of the original invisible to the reader, or they can rotate an original artwork to an angle of their choosing. In this cover, we wonder if the cover was rotated 180 degrees because gravity is pulling Red Sonja's hair up into the picture. At the same time, the pose seems to correspond with her on her back holding the wicked dagger at bay. Perhaps this is the orientation originally intended by Ward and the reversal of gravity a tool used by the artist to dramatic effect.

8

  • title: Red Sonja: Lord of Fools (2019)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Christian Ward
  • writer: Mark Russell
  • artists: Bob Q & Katie O'Meara
  • issue: one-shot
  • release date: July, 2019
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: Christian Ward drew the cover for Red Sonja: Lord of Fools, a one-shot that told a peripheral tale, which connected to the main storyline unfolding in Red Sonja (2019). Both the one-shot and the main story were written by Mark Russell.

9

  • title: Killing Red Sonja (2020)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Christian Ward
  • writers: Mark Russell & Bryce Ingman
  • artist: Craig Rousseau
  • issue: #1 of 5
  • cover: A cover
  • release date: March, 2020
  • commentary: It appears that Christian Ward will draw the A covers to the Killing Red Sonja series. At the time of writing, only the first two issues have been released, although Ward's covers for issues 3 through 5 have been revealed. Dynamite is releasing alternate colored variants of the main Ward covers as well. Two examples for this first issue are here and there.

  • title: Killing Red Sonja (2020)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Christian Ward
  • writers: Mark Russell & Bryce Ingman
  • artist: Craig Rousseau
  • issue: #2 of 5
  • cover: A cover
  • release date: July, 2020
  • commentary: This cover to issue #2 of Killing Red Sonja also has a couple alternately colored versions here and there. (Again, one wonders if this was the original orientation of the cover proposed by Ward, or if it was rotated to accommodate the title.)
