A Red Sonja Cover Gallery XXXII:
Rubi

This is the thirty-second installment in our Red Sonja themed cover galleries, continuing from the first gallery. Below, we present thirty selected covers from various comic books, featuring Red Sonja as envisioned by artist Mel Rubi.

  • commentary: Mel Rubi was selected as the first interior artist for Dynamite's 2005 resurrection of the Red Sonja comic books. He also created covers for the first 18 issues. In some cases there are more than one Mel Rubi cover, one with regular distribution and a second Dynamic Forces cover. He then returned to contribute another dozen plus covers scattered in arcs across the remaining 80-issue series. It is Mel Rubi who created the look of Red Sonja that many readers associate with Dynamite.

Other galleries of Red Sonja covers feature numerous contributions from the artist Mel Rubi, including
Given this myriad of examples, a gallery dedicated entirely to Rubi covers may be deemed excessive. Nevertheless, here is just such a a gallery. We suppose visitors to the site will have reason to appreciate it.

  • artist: Mel Rubi
  • issue: #13 of 80

  • commentary: While somewhat atypical of Rubi's depictions of Red Sonja, this "harem" cover to issue #13 of the 2005 series remains popular among collectors for obvious reasons.

3

4

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (2005)

  • cover artist: Mel Rubi
  • writer: Brian Reed
  • artist: Walter Geovani
  • issue: #48 of 80
  • release date: September, 2009
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: Rubi did experiment with styles. This cover is especially unusual among Rubi covers for the rendering of Red Sonja's face as well as for the way it has been colored.

5

  • title: Sword of Red Sonja: Doom of the Gods (2007)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Mel Rubi
  • writer: Luke Lieberman
  • artist: Lui Antonio
  • issue: #1 of 4
  • release date: October, 2007
  • cover: C variant
  • commentary: In addition to the main Red Sonja series, Rubi provided covers for shorter story arcs as well. He created covers for all four issues of Sword of Red Sonja: Doom of the Gods, of which this is the first.

6

  • title: Queen Sonja (2009)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Mel Rubi
  • writer: Joshua Ortega
  • artist: Mel Rubi
  • issue: #04 of 35
  • release date: February, 2010
  • cover: B variant
  • commentary: In addition to being the first interior artist for Queen Sonja, Rubi created covers for the first eleven issues as well. Many of these covers are montage covers, with scenes and characters in the background, related only to the figure of Red Sonja in the foreground by the fact that they appear in the same story. This cover also illustrates a change in Red Sonja's armor, as presented by Rubi. Previously the armor was composed of many smaller scales. These have been dropped in favor of fewer, larger scales with decidedly less coverage in the top half.

7

  • title: Red Sonja Unchained (2013)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Mel Rubi
  • writer: Peter Brett
  • artist: Jack Jadson
  • issue: #4 of 4
  • cover: A cover
  • release date: August, 2013
  • commentary: Rubi created covers for all four issues of Red Sonja Unchained, in which she doffs her traditional armor only because she is trapped within a cursed pelt of a demon that she slew. There were also retailer incentive variants for each issue, in which the blue pelt is replaced by chain mail. An example from issue #3 has been previously featured.

8

  • title: Red Sonja (2016)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Mel Rubi
  • writer: Amy Chu
  • artist: Carlos E. Gomez
  • issue: #04 of 25
  • cover: E variant
  • release date: April, 2017
  • commentary: In Amy Chu's 2016 reinterpretation of Red Sonja, Rubi created covers to the first nine issues. Three examples conclude this gallery. Here, Rubi has deliberately changed his portrayal of Red Sonja, compared to his work of a decade earlier. One element is seen in sharper angles.

9

  • writer: Amy Chu
  • artist: Carlos E. Gomez
  • issue: #07 of 25

  • commentary: Of the later Rubi covers, this is an example that most strongly hearkens back to an earlier style.
