Kulan Gath

This is the twenty-sixth installment in our Red Sonja themed cover galleries, continuing from the first gallery. Below, we present ten selected covers from various comic books, which feature Red Sonja and the recurring foe, the wizard Kulan Gath.

  • commentary: The 1979 introduction into the long-running Marvel Team-Up series paired Red Sonja with Spider-Man for a single issue. As a wizard, Kulan Gath, was capable of transporting individuals through time and across the boundaries separating parallel universes. In this comic, Red Sonja is channeled into the body of Spider-Man's girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson.

  • commentary: The pairing of Red Sonja and Spider-man was revisited twenty-eight years later in a five-issue expansion of essentially the same story, which was earlier presented in a single issue. Again, Red Sonja is channeled into Mary Jane Watson's body to battle Kulan Gath in modern times. Michael Turner drew the covers for all five issues.

  • commentary: Dynamite chose to reintroduce Kulan Gath in issue #12 of the definitive 80-issue run. In this cover, Romita provides a cover that harkens back to Red Sonja's days at Marvel. There was another cover for issue #12 featuring Red Sonja and Kulan Gath, which appears in the Hapax Legomena (Masculine) gallery as it was the only Red Sonja cover created by George Pérez.

  • commentary: Through-out this series, Kulan Gath remains the master-mind villain. This cover by John Royle portrays Red Sonja as a minor nuisance, capable of fitting in his hand. Red Sonja is similarly seen in the clutches of Kulan Gath in Prophecy #4 and in the grasp of Thulsa Doom in Red Sonja: Atlantis Rises #4.
