A Red Sonja Cover Gallery XXIII:
Hapax Legomena (Masculine)

This is the twenty-third installment in our Red Sonja themed cover galleries, continuing from the first gallery. Below, we present thirty selected covers from various comic books, featuring male cover artists who have, at least at the date of this compilation, created only a single Red Sonja cover. This gallery is a follow-up to the gallery of feminine hapax legomena.

1

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (1977)
  • publisher: Marvel
  • cover artist: Dave Cockrum
  • writer: Roy Thomas
  • artist: John Buscema
  • issue: #15 of 15
  • release date: May, 1979
  • cover: A cover
  • episode: "The Tomb of Three Dead Kings!"
  • commentary: Dave Cockrum is credited with a single Red Sonja cover, in which she faces a quartet of vampires.

2

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (1983)
  • publisher: Marvel
  • cover artist: Dave Simons & Steve Mitchell
  • writers: Christie Marx & Roy Thomas
  • artists: Ernie Colon & Alan Kupperberg
  • issue: #2 of 2
  • release date: March, 1983
  • cover: A cover
  • episode: "The Sea That Steals!"
  • commentary: Dave Simons created a single cover of Red Sonja in the era of the blue tunic. There is a classic feel to this cover, emphasized by the terrified man in the bottom left, howling as if belonged in Edvard Munch's The Scream.

3

  • title: Red Sonja: 3-D (1988)
  • publisher: Blackthorne
  • cover artists: David Cody Weiss & Adrian Moro
  • writers: David Cody Weiss & Bobbi J.G. Weiss
  • artist: Edgar Martiarena
  • issue: one-shot
  • release date: October, 1988
  • cover: A cover
  • note: This issue is sometimes listed as Blackthorne 3-D Series (1985) #53.
  • commentary: David Cody Weiss & Bobbi J.G. Weiss are a husband and wife story-telling team. Their take on Red Sonja in this one-shot from Blackthorne comics is unlike any other. The outfit is particularly unique, combining as it does a silver bikini top and a cheeky red bottom connected to each other by skin-tone mesh fabric, the likes of which you might find in the costume of a figure skating competition.

4

  • title: Red Sonja: Scavenger Hunt (1995)
  • publisher: Marvel
  • cover artists: The Brothers Hildebrandt
  • writer: Glenn Herdling
  • artists: Ken Lashley & Harry Candelario
  • issue: one-shot
  • release date: December, 1995
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: Greg and Tim Hildebrandt are responsible for one unusual Red Sonja one-shot from Marvel. Again the outfit is one of a kind. The chain mail bikini top is supported by a single chain leading to a silver neck collar. The chain mail bikini bottom appears to be designed as a thong constructed of a single chain.

  • writer: J.T. Krul
  • artist: Noah Salonga
  • issue: #07 of 80

  • commentary: Pat Lee has a single Red Sonja to his name, but it is a good one featuring interesting lighting and capturing an on-going narrative in which reinforcements race down the passage toward the sounds of battle.
