A Red Sonja Cover Gallery XXI:
Alternative Visions

This is the twenty-first installment in our Red Sonja themed cover galleries, continuing from the first gallery. Below, we present twenty selected covers from various comic books, which feature artists with unconventional visions of Red Sonja.

1

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (2005)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Gabriele Dell'Otto
  • writers: Michael Avon Oeming & Mike Carey
  • artist: Mel Rubi
  • issue: #03 of 80
  • release date: November, 2005
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: Of course, every artist brings their unique vision to the subject of their figurative art. In this gallery, we examine various covers in which the artists presented Red Sonja in an unusual light. The cover may deviate either in the portrayal of Red Sonja or in an artistic technique. In either case, the cover strikes the reader as atypical for a comic book. In this cover by Gabrielle Dell'Otto, the scraped background is a unique feature as is the translucent torso and arms of Red Sonja through which the scrape marks are visible.

2

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (2005)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Eduardo Risso
  • writers: Michael Avon Oeming & Mike Carey
  • artist: Mel Rubi
  • issue: #05 of 80
  • release date: February, 2006
  • cover: B variant
  • commentary: In this cover by Eduardo Risso, what strikes the eye as unusual is the way that hair is drawn without any internal structure. It is colored by a solid gradient also without structure.

3

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (2005)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: J.G. Jones
  • writer: Michael Avon Oeming
  • artist: Mel Rubi
  • issue: #14 of 80
  • release date: September, 2006
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: Ordinarily, Red Sonja is portrayed as having a piercing gaze. Often she is intently focused on an approaching adversary. What is unique to this cover by J.G. Jones is the uncharacteristically wistful expression of Red Sonja, as she seeming stares, lost in a day dream, up into the sky.

4

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (2005)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Gene Ha
  • writer: Michael Avon Oeming
  • artist: Mel Rubi
  • issue: #18 of 80
  • release date: January, 2007
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: This cover by Gene Ha portrays Red Sonja with a particular technique, as if a flat matte has been applied to the image, so that it makes her look as if she has been copied out of a magazine.

5

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (2005)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Stephen Segovia
  • writer: Michael Avon Oeming
  • artist: Homs
  • issue: #23 of 80
  • release date: June, 2007

  • commentary: This cover by Stephen Segovia has an Art Nouveau feel to it. With the frame it looks as if it might be part of Tarot card set. As a side note, a decade later, Dynamite did create a deck of Tarot cards, each featuring a different Red Sonja cover.

  • cover artist: Nat Jones
  • writer: Joshua Ortega
  • artist: Fabiano Neves
  • issue: #32 of 80

  • commentary: This image by Nat Jones of Red Sonja emerging from deep shadows is unusually dark and has allowed to obscure some features of our heroine to great effect.

  • commentary: Michael Avon Oeming has written numerous issues of Red Sonja comic books. This is the only published cover that he has drawn. There are numerous unusual features evident, including the spiral eyes, the featureless background and the absence of foreground or context save for a severed hand and broken spear head.

10
