A Red Sonja Cover Gallery XIV:
Archery

This is the fourteenth installment in our Red Sonja themed cover galleries, continuing from the first gallery. Below, we present ten selected covers from various comic books, which feature Red Sonja as either the archer or the target.

1

  • title: Conan the King (1980)
  • publisher: Marvel
  • cover artist: Mary Wilshire
  • writer: Alan Zelenetz
  • artists: Marc Silvestri and Geof Isherwood
  • issue: #28 of 55
  • cover: A cover
  • release date: May, 1985
  • commentary: Red Sonja's skill was primarily with the sword. She competently wielded a battle axe or a flail as necessary. Infrequently she was called to abandon a melee weapon in favor of a bow, a skill she apparently picked up as a hunter on the Hyrkanian plains. To our knowledge, Red Sonja appears in only one issue, #28, of the 55-issue series, Conan the King. This cover is drawn by Mary Wilshire. Curiously, the shaft of the arrow appears at a perpendicular angle to the bow.

As an addendum, there are a couple other galleries that have examples of notable Red Sonja covers with the theme of archery, including
    • Cosplay: #13
    • Chatzoudis: #9

  • cover artist: Jim Lee
  • writer: John Layman
  • artist: Andy Smith
  • issue: #1 of 4

  • issue: #21 of 80
  • release date: April, 2007

  • commentary: There are a few covers in the definitive Dynamite run of Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword, in which she is armed with bow and arrow. This is only one with a flaming projectile.

6

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (2005)

  • writer: Brian Reed
  • artist: Walter Geovani

  • release date: August, 2009

  • commentary: It is not uncommon for comic book artists to intentionally recall scenes from other artists or even other characters, as a kind of homage. This cover by Mel Rubi recalls the scene in Moria from the film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, in which Legolas leaps atop a cave troll and delivers a killing blow from close range.

7

  • title: Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (2005)

  • writer: Eric Trautmann
  • artist: Noah Salonga
  • issue: #58 of 80
  • release date: November, 2011
  • cover: B variant
  • commentary: More often than not, rather than being behind the bow, Red Sonja is the subject of the archer, as in this cover by Walter Geovani, in which she adeptly dashes aside several well-placed arrows in the barrage.

8

  • title: Queen Sonja (2009)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Lucio Parrillo
  • writer: Luke Lieberman
  • artist: Fritz Casas
  • issue: #24 of 35

  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Amanda Conner
  • writer: Mark Russell
  • artist: Mirko Colak
  • issue: #2 of 28
  • release date: March, 2019
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: Heedless to this barrage of arrows, Red Sonja prepares to lay waste to those who would shoot at her. Amanda Conner creatively blends the red of the blood moon, the red of Sonja's hair and the red of blood into a continuous mass.

10

  • title: Red Sonja (2019)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Mirko Colak
  • writer: Mark Russell
  • artist: Mirko Colak
  • issue: #11 of 28
  • release date: December, 2019

  • commentary: In this cover by Mirko Colak, Red Sonja bears an expression, betraying her determination as well as her irritation with being the target of these archers. With a few more steps, she will make quick work of them.
