12

  • title: Queen Sonja (2009)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Fabiano Neves
  • writer: Luke Lieberman
  • artist: Mel Rubi
  • issue: #12 of 35
  • release date: December, 2010
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: Fabiano Neves has drawn several covers of Red Sonja in which she is shown from behind. In this one, as in the cover to Savage Tales Issue #10, the rear piece of the lower half of the armor is raised to expose the undergarment. This sort of voyeurism is, we suppose, intended to be titillating, although it brings to mind the so-called "up-skirt" shots of Wonder Woman in the Justice League movie, to which many in the audience objected. Fans of Red Sonja can be grateful that her influence on popular culture is sufficiently limited enough to avoid the reprobation of such cultural police.

13

  • cover artist: Carlos Rafael
  • writer: Arvid Nelson
  • artist: Edgar Salazar
  • issue: #17 of 35
  • release date: June, 2011

  • commentary: In this Red Sonja cover, Carlos Rafael juxtaposes the view of Red Sonja and a desolate landscape in which vultures feed on the carrion of the battlefield.

14

  • title: Queen Sonja (2009)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Lucio Parrillo
  • writer: Luke Lieberman
  • artist: Fritz Casas
  • issue: #23 of 35
  • release date: November, 2011
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: Numerous artists have drawn Red Sonja as viewed from behind. In these galleries, we attempt to present a broad distribution of cover artists. However, in this case, there are several artists whose work we show twice, to the exclusion of other artists, because they defined this theme. Such is the case in this second entry from Lucio Parrillo, who has additional entries, such asQueen Sonja #34, which could also have been included here, but were omitted in the interests of breadth of artists.

15

  • title: Red Sonja Annual (2007)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Jose Malaga
  • writer: Scott Beatty
  • artists: Joseph Menna & Daniel Brereton
  • issue: #4 of 4
  • release date: May, 2013
  • cover: A cover
  • commentary: There are numerous instances where an artist has only a single Red Sonja cover. To our knowledge this is the only Red Sonja cover by Jose Malaga.

16

  • title: Red Sonja (2013)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Jenny Frison
  • writer: Gail Simone
  • artist: Walter Geovani
  • issue: #14 of 18
  • cover: A cover
  • release date: January, 2015
  • commentary: Jenny Frison created a version of Red Sonja for each of the eighteen issues in the 2013 Red Sonja series. She visited many of the traditional themes of Red Sonja and she contributed this view of our heroine from behind.

17

  • title: Red Sonja (2016)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Mel Rubi
  • writer: Amy Chu
  • artist: Carlos E. Gomez
  • issue: #03 of 25
  • cover: E variant
  • release date: March, 2017
  • commentary: Mel Rubi is one of the most prolific artists in terms of generating covers for Red Sonja comics. So, although we included an entry (#3) from him already in this gallery, we show another here. This one is from 2017, while the earlier cover is from 2006. As was the case with Parrillo, there are other covers by Rubi, such as Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword (2005) issue #37, which could have been included in this theme.

18

  • title: Red Sonja (2016)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: J. Scott Campbell
  • writer: Amy Chu
  • artist: Carlos E. Gomez
  • issue: #03 of 25
  • cover: B variant
  • release date: March, 2017
  • commentary: J. Scott Campbell is regarded as an artist who can bring his signature sensuality to female heroes across many comics book genres: science fiction, fantasy and superhero. This is the third in a series of sketches he did for the first three issues of Amy Chu's 2016 interpretation of Red Sonja.

19

  • title: Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil (2019)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Jee Hyung Lee
  • writer: Luke Lieberman
  • artist: Sergio Davila
  • issue: #1 of 4
  • retailer exclusive: Frankie's Comics
  • release date: June, 2019
  • commentary: The first issue of the 2019 four-issue series The Birth of Red Sonja included several noteworthy retailer exclusives. This cover by Jee Hyung Lee was available in clean and bloody versions. In the bloody version (not shown) Red Sonja is covered from head to toe in splattered blood and flecks of gore.

  • title: Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil (2019)
  • publisher: Dynamite
  • cover artist: Kunkka
  • writer: Luke Lieberman
  • artist: Sergio Davila
  • issue: #1 of 4
  • retailer exclusive: Paper Asylum Shop
  • release date: June, 2019
  • commentary: We close this theme with another retailer exclusive cover from the first issue of the 2019 four-issue series The Birth of Red Sonja. This cover by Kunkka is a gripping combination of vivid red hair, glinting and bloody sword, laterally cloven orc skull centered around Red Sonja's derriere, which is portrayed with a fullness that seems at odds with a mercenary who lives through lean times on the road and battlefield.
