In the forest, there are various fungi that don't fit our preconception of mushrooms. There are mushrooms which take the shape of corals, that one associates more naturally with coral reefs.

We found two such mushrooms lodged among roots beneath a sagging canopy of spiderwebs. My sister and I introduced ourselves. The mushrooms turned out to be sisters. They wanted only to marry brothers and inquired if Poison Pie had one. When we regretfully informed them that Poison Pie was an only child, they said in unison, "C'est la vie, c'est la vie." As soon as we were out of earshot, I said incredulously to Marie, "Could you imagine two Poison Pies?"
