On the First Dwarf
It is said that the first Dwarf wandered out of the mountains into the Spring of Faerie on accident. It is also rumored that Spring did not have to resort to threats of violence or promises of delight in order to subjugate the dwarf completely to her will. It is said, though nary a resident of Faerie will admit to believing it, that the Dwarf and Spring formed a friendship that blossomed instantly and miraculously without the aid of manure or any kind of fertilizer whatsoever, without pollination or the agency of any insect, without reason or justification. The Dwarf, it is said, simply enjoyed the sight of Spring, having known nothing of the like in the land of his origin; and, though he was himself an unpleasant sight, Spring found some unstated, redeeming quality in him that prevented her from immediately driving him from her company.
