On Winter
In Faerie, Winter is feared not for the chill bite of her icy teeth but for the dagger at her belt. Red blood on a field of white snow is the heraldry of Winter. White flurries above an unmarked field of snow are a sign that Winter is currently engaged in a practice of self-abnegation.
It is said that Winter has a court whose sole aim is to maintain her isolation. The courtiers devise traps that manifest as avalanches and blizzards. They fashion garments woven of pine needles to disguise Winter in her forests. They adorn her with circlets and necklaces of the finest, most perfect snowflakes. In her full regalia, she diffracts sunlight like an icy mirage.
Winter is hidden because she holds the much sought after Winter Keys of Faerie. Only she knows the true purpose of the keys, but some suspect that they might open the many doors linking disparate facets of Faerie. To peer behind one such door, it is rumored, is to gain an understanding of the ineffable and inscrutable mechanics of this world.
