Eugenia asked the third lady she met in the forest, "Is the forest safe?".
"Oh yes," said the lady, continuing to walk as she talked. "Except at night and except when it rains and except when you are alone,
especially if you are a little girl."
Eugenia watched the woman's figure recede into the foliage. It began to rain.
