This compilation features performances from a concert on August 14, 1971. The last track on the second lp is by Lost Aaraaff, titled, Hell of screams and is about ten minutes long. The Lost Aaraaff track is an excerpt from the entire Lost Aaraaff concert later released on disc 1 of the Soul's True Love 4-CD boxed set. (See the Lost Aaraaff section of concordance.) The 1989 cd reissue contains only some of the contents of the original double lp. A complete two cd reissue with DVD documentary is listed below under Genya (2003).

What is this release doing here, you may ask? It's a bootleg, not an official release. It's a split release and not really a compilation. Hell. I don't know. It's an early release that had a label associated with it and it had more than one artist working independently on it. Anyway, the first side of the cassette features six tracks by UFO OR DIE (Eye Yamatsuka, Yoshimi Tokota, Tony Lee). The second side has five tracks with Haino: three with guitar, one with voice and percussion and one with Haino on flute and percussion with another Japanese vocalist and what may be sampling of a sultry female English voice.

This compilation includes Haino’s second hurdy gurdy release, preceded only by the solo album, “The Twenty-First Century Hard-y Guide-y Man”. For me, this is my favorite hurdy gurdy track, including all of the subsequent releases. Here, in a concise 17 minutes, one experiences the essence of the Haino hurdy gurdy performance. There is a four or five minute instrumental drone to get one attenuated to the music followed by a brief gap of silence and then a proper song, hurdy gurdy plus voice. It’s not hard to see the beauty in song. The hurdy gurdy has a melancholic and plaintive sound; Haino’s voice croons. This is a jewel. In other hurdy gurdy releases, there is a pent-up violence being released in the harsh sounds that emanate from the hurdy gurdy, but here the instrument is prodded gently and responds accordingly.

In the reading of music reviews covering an artist’s body of work, I am always suspicious when the reviewer selects as the “best” release something totally obscure, long out of print, and virtually impossible to obtain. I feel that the reviewer may be showcasing his extensive knowledge of the body of work and highlighting this obscurity not purely based on its virtues relative to the other releases in the canon, but also due to some sense of superiority in having access to all these various records. In short, it annoys me. Here, in the case of Haino’s hurdy gurdy output, I cite as a favorite this old compilation release rather than one of the five solo discs of hurdy gurdy, some of which are readily available today. I can only say, in this particular instance, that there is a real fondness in my heart for this track on the halana compilation, which far exceeds that for any other Haino hurdy gurdy song. That said, this 17 minute track is incorporated into the 72-minute track on Even Now Still I Think, starting about twenty-six minutes into the piece .

Track ten on disc one is credited to Haino and is titled Hone made aishite, which is the same title as track six on the first Aihiyo album. Whether this is a solo version of the song is unknown. In 2000 and 2001, Haino was playing songs from the Aihiyo song book under the name Aihiyo in solo performances. At the time of this writing, the author of this document has not heard this track or the rest of the compilation.
