introduction to bootleg recordings
This document makes no attempt to provide a complete cataloguing of bootleg recordings of Haino, as there are thousands, some of which the existence is known only to the individual who recorded the show. Haino is very permissive regarding the recording of his live performances. High-tech microphones connected to professional grade recording devices are routinely placed near the front of the stage. As such the quality of some of the recordings is amazingly good. In fact, there are several instances of recordings being available on the bootleg circuit prior to being officially released, in some cases from the same source.

The list of Haino collaborators documented on bootlegs far exceeds that on the official releases. However, very successful live collaborations some times eventually produce an official release. For example, live shows of Haino performing with Masami Akita and with KK Null circulated for some years before eventually before Kikuri (Haino & Akita) or Mamono (Haino & Null) were released. Still, there are numerous examples of collaborations that have yet to see official release. Some examples include Takahashi Ayuo, Hans Reichel, Kazue Sawai, Saoi Inoue, Tony Conrad, Martin Nolan, Thurston Moore, Natsuki Kido, Michio Karimata, Shuichi Chino, Eichi Hayashi, Yoshihide Otomo, Munehiro Narita, Keisuke Ohta. Hiromichi Sakamoto, Yamamoto Seiichi, Ellen Fullman, Masayoshi Urabe, Doronco and Sami (Les Rallizes Denudes), Jim O'Rourke, Shiho Ishihara, Han Bennink, etc.

In this section, we simply provide some commentary on a few randomly selected bootleg recordings, arranged chronologically.

Typically bootlegs consist of no packaging. They are simply either a cdr or a set of files, perhaps with a text file providing information about the recording. However there was a bootleg produced in early 2005 that incorporated some sophisticated packaging. It was intended as a demonstration of the esthetic of aRCHIVE records. One copy of the bootleg was given to Haino, who subsequently approved two releases on aRCHIVE records, the solo album reveal'd to none as yet - an expedience to utterly vanish consciousness while still alive and the collaborative album keiji haino and sitaar tah!: animamima. Here is a link to a review of the bootleg release written in 2005.

keiji haino, hans reichel, & motoharu yoshizawa (january 10, 1991)

keiji haino & martin nolan (april 10, 2001)
Personnel:
Keiji Haino (percussion, guitar, voice)
Martin Nolan (low whistle, uilleann pipes)
Venue:   Project, Dublin, Ireland
Date:   April 10, 2001

The number of collaborators that Haino has played with in live performances dwarfs the already extensive list of those with whom official recordings have been released. This show appears to have been a one-off collaboration between Haino and Martin Nolan. In this performance, Nolan plays uilleann pipes. There is an almost perfect blending of talents in this hour-long performance. More Text Forthcoming.
