Carbon Nanotube

  color legend:
  • carbon = red
Carbon nanotubes are tubes made of carbon with diameters typically measured in nanometers. (There are one billion nanometers in a meter.) Single-wall carbon nanotubes can be idealized as cutouts from a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice of carbon atoms rolled up to form a hollow cylinder. Carbon nanotubes can exhibit remarkable electrical conductivity, while others are semiconductors. (Semiconductors are the basis of all modern-day electronics) They also have exceptional tensile strength and thermal conductivity, because of their nanostructure and strength of the bonds between carbon atoms.

There are a variety of carbon nanotube structures. This particular carbon nanotube has a chirality (n,m) = (12,0).

The carbon nanotube structure was generated at TubeGen Online.
